About us

The Show People Academy Workshops offer a holistic range of life changing and life enhancing experiences and benefits through a series of performance workshops leading to a final event designed to promote physical & mental Health, well being, enhancing dignity, self-worth, hope, aspiration, social connection, empowerment, inclusion and diversity and improving confidence and self-efficacy.

We are offering workshop style classes to anyone interested in arts, dance or modelling as a career or a hobby.

How

The workshops are designed to include catwalk "modelling", an enjoyable and different way of achieving the benefits of being active.

The workshops are held weekly over 12 weeks with a live graduation event in front of a live audience as a finale to the workshops. The finale event is a way for the participants to experience the benefits of the workshops. We aim to deliver the workshops and a finale event every four months each year enhancing the prospects of the young in the community who would not normally get the opportunity to take part in performance arts related projects. Ideally the participants will use the new skills and knowledge learnt from the workshops to better aid their involvement and work prospects within the arts industry.

The finale event will feature recycled and vintage garments and will help to promote sustainability. During the event we will involve and train volunteers who may be interested in helping with the production and running of the finale event. The workshops will raise awareness about the importance and benefit of volunteering within the local community and events. The workshops are a unique way of providing access to those who would not normally have access to a way of being involved in the arts and inspiring them to participate further with a greater understanding of their own potential within the arts platform.

Why

Our creative workshops have evolved from the work of Robert Blake; dancer, catwalk model and choreographer. Robert (an equity member know as Blake Roberts) has participated in fashion & hair events, TV & film extra work and theatre productions. He has witnessed the exclusion of certain groups but also seen and experienced the benefits of performance on individuals, bonding and becoming more confident, self-aware, empowered and improving fitness through our workshops and rehearsals for live events, ultimately staged in front of live audiences. We embrace members of society that would never normally take the opportunity to participate in the performance arts including people from ethnic and deprived backgrounds. We want to demonstrate that diversity, when given the correct skills can be used to promote the performing arts, fashion, health and well-being and sustainability. We aim to be wholly inclusive and are passionate about bringing the arts to disadvantaged communities.

Where

The workshops will be delivered locally and nationally. We aim to embrace members of society that would never normally have the opportunity to participate in the performance arts and the locations we use will be close enough to deprived areas to facilitate ease of access.

Evaluation

We hosted a local fashion event, which featured a catwalk show, with associated stalls supplying sustainable fashion and a variety of arts and crafts. Our aim was to provide a graduation event as a culmination to the course of workshops, which allowed models to showcase their newly acquired skills. We also wanted to provide a platform to promote local small business - Clothing was supplied by a local second-hand business and the stalls were all Doncaster based. The models were local women ranging in age from 17-50 something. We have taken into account feedback given through questionnaires and consultation with members of society from different economic backgrounds, different ethnicity's and differing cultures who have taken part in our trial events this feedback has enabled us to create a unique performance platform that offers life changing benefits to the participants.
